Summer road trips are about more than the destination; it’s the journey that counts! But everyone knows that after a few long hours on the road, driving can get boring. This is especially true for families with children who get restless on long trips. Luckily, there are quite a few ways to pass the time in the car. Here are a few activities to try on your next road trip.
1. Audiobooks
Get a jump start on your summer reading list. Audiobooks are a great way to pass time on the road. When you’re listening to an engaging story, you concentrate less on counting down the miles, and time flies by. Plus, you’ll have a new book to talk about with friends and family. Visit your local library or download a number of free books on your smartphone to keep everyone amused.
2. Road Games
Everyone has played the ABC Game or the License Plate Game at some time or another. Road games typically use things you see along your journey in an interactive way that cures boredom. From pop culture games and billboard signs to convenience store challenges, and even games based on livestock sighted on the road, Buzzfeed has some great recommendations.
3. Coloring
Coloring has always been a go-to for parents to help cure kids’ boredom, but adult coloring books are all the rage right now. Coloring not only helps pass the time, but soothes anxiety and calms the mind. Pick up a coloring book and some colored pencils or markers for your next long journey.
4. Explore Along Your Route
Depending on your travel timeline, you may find yourself with extra time to spend on out-of-car activities. Do a little research before you set out and see if there are any interesting museums, hikes, stores or other roadside attractions along the way that you could explore. Not only does this help you feel more like your trip has a destination, but it also helps to break up the time spent cramped in a car.
5. Music, Podcasts or Language Lessons
Traveling solo? One of the best ways to keep yourself awake and amused on the road is by listening to something. Take the time to start a new podcast, listen to that new album you haven’t had a chance to hear yet, or learn a new language. You might also make yourself a playlist of your favorite songs before you leave so you can sing them out loud, judgement free. Just be sure to pick songs that energize you and won’t put you to sleep!
No matter how you choose to spend your road trip hours, always make sure to stay focused on the road, take breaks when you’re tired, and stay hydrated. Also, be sure to do routine vehicle checks when you gas up to ensure everything is running smoothly so you can enjoy the ride. From all of us here at Quick-Set Auto Glass, drive safely out there!
