There are many things in life that are uncontrollable. Traffic, the weather, your hairline … Unfortunately, there’s not really anything you can do about gas prices, either—they are what they are.
However, there are still several ways for you to get ahead of the gas game, which is why we compiled this list! Bring on the savings!
1. Use A Gas App.
There are many options, so all you need to do is search in your particular app store and read those reviews. While some apps are designed to show you lowest gas prices in the area, others can actually tell you which streets to avoid so that you don’t waste gas idling in traffic! If you need a place to start your search, here is an article from The Balance that may help!
2. Know Where You’re Going.
The more time you spend driving around aimlessly, missing your turn, and getting turned around completely, the more gas you will waste. Many new cars come with GPS, but even if your car doesn’t have one, you can get it on your phone (just have someone else look at it while you drive). Figuring out the most direct route to your destination will save you both money and patience!
3. Use Your Rewards Card.
You know, the one that you always swear you’ll put back in the same slot after you use it—but inevitably end up digging through your wallet, pockets, and basket—every single trip? Yeah, that one. Many grocery store rewards cards also save you money on gas, so make sure you know where it is! If you’re stopping by the store for snacks and a “last chance” bathroom break anyway, you may as well fill (and save) up!
4. Don’t Wait Too Long To Fill Up.
While it can be very tempting to drive and drive until the line on your gas gauge is hovering precariously over the red line, DON’T DO IT! First of all, that’s extremely dangerous (What if you run out and there are no stations close by?), but second of all, when you do run out, you will probably have to go to the closest station available. That means that the apps you downloaded and the strategic planning you did to find the cheapest possible gas goes right out the window. Fill up regularly!
5. Bike Or Walk.
Pretty simple, right? Well … yes, it really IS that simple! The weather is nice, so why not take advantage of the sunshine, get in a little exercise, and accomplish your errands—all at the same time? You can always plan your excursions for early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the extreme heat. Plus, there will probably be less people for you to elbow through at the store that way! (Don’t really elbow people, though—they don’t like that.)
Wherever you’re headed this summer, we hope you have the time of your life!
