It’s hard to believe, but the end of summer is already fast approaching, and lots of folks are making plans for their last hurrahs. By now, everyone has likely also gathered the essentials for travel—but what about pet accessories for those last-minute road trips?
We’ve compiled a list of various gadgets and gizmos to help your beloved pals ride in comfort and style!
1. Car Seat Covers
There are a number of reasons why car seats are not nearly as comfortable to your pet as they are to you, not least of all because animals are simply built differently. That being said, it’s a lot easier for your fuzzy friend to go flying off of their seat when you hit speed bumps or stop suddenly, especially if the seats are leather. (Speaking of leather seats, as anyone wearing shorts can tell you, those babies get hot.)
However, there are quite a few options when it comes to keeping your pet safe, comfortable, and in their seat! If your pet doesn’t necessarily fall off the seat, but tends to want to sit up front with you (which can be quite dangerous), there are plenty of pet barriers available to keep them from wiggling their way into your lap. Otherwise, pet car seat covers are a great way to protect your animal from seats that are too hot, protect the material itself, or prevent them from sliding onto the floor.
2. Pet Seatbelts
Just like humans, animal passengers in your vehicle should wear seat belts, too (although keep in mind, they should definitely be tailored to your pet). Pet seat belts will help to protect your fuzzy pal in the event of accidents or even sudden turns and stops that would risk ejecting them from their seat or the car. Further, a seat belt will ensure that your pet does not wander around the vehicle, possibly causing a distraction for the driver or a hazard in the event of said accidents or sudden turns and stops.
If your pet is smaller, they may also enjoy a booster seat, which offers the benefit of keeping them secured in their seat (even more so with the addition of a pet seat belt) while also giving them the comfy view that makes your lap so appealing—but much safer. (Please note that pets should not ride in the front seat.)
3. Water Dispensers/Receptacles
It should go without saying that your pet needs water during travel, too, and while a simple bowl and water bottle will do just fine, how much fun is that, really? (If you’re not looking for fun in this area, feel free to keep scrolling.) Otherwise, there are a variety of collapsible bowls (many of which can clip onto your animal’s leash) and water bottle/bowl combos from which to choose. Be sure to offer water often, and keep yourself hydrated, as well!
4. Portable Cleaning Devices
It’s a scientific fact (okay, maybe not “scientific”) that road trips are way more fun when everyone gets a little muddy! Unfortunately, it’s not so fun when everyone tracks said mud back into the car. Luckily for you, pet grooming wipes exist to help wipe away dirt, dust, grass, sand—you name it! And for the more serious cases of “fun,” be sure to check out portable paw cleaners and portable pet showers for a fresh, fuzzy friend, even where actual baths and showers are unavailable.
6. Calming Supplements
Road trips and travel, in general, can be very stressful for your pet. The uncertainty, new scenery, and constant jostling motion are just a few of the contributing factors to this anxiety. That being said, pet calming supplements can be a great way to help alleviate some of this angst and allow your pet to enjoy the ride. (Because every furry friend is different, be sure to discuss any new supplements with your veterinarian before commencing treatment!)
So, there you have it...
