When you live in Colorado, it’s likely your focus for getaways involves being in or near the mountains. After all, the gorgeous views and endless outdoor activities are a no-brainer. However, there are also a number of great day trips you can take in the southern part of the state. Since Spring in the mountains can be frigid and snowy, why not take to the southern part of the state for moderate temperatures and great activities. Read on for a few spring getaway ideas!
Colorado Springs
If you haven’t gotten a chance to check out “the Springs,” now is the time to do so. From the beautiful Garden of the Gods Park to the quaint shops in Manitou, there’s plenty of activities for everyone. Colorado Springs is also the home to the Air Force Academy.
Mesa Verde National Park
Explore a bit of Colorado history by exploring the native cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde. Once home to the Anasazi people, Mesa Verde offers a glimpse into the lives of the Paleo-Indian inhabitants by letting visitors go inside the cliff dwellings. Mesa Verde is especially good for kids, and spring is a great time to go.
Sand Dunes National Park
Imagine skiing and sledding down sand instead of snow. Thanks to the Sand Dunes in the San Luis Valley, you can! These are the highest sand dunes in all of North America, and they’re just a three-hour drive from Denver. While you’re there you can also visit Zapata Falls and do some hiking. Make a weekend out of it; you can camp right at the park!
Visit Silverton & Durango
If you’re into trains, this one is for you. The Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a popular tourist attraction in Southern Colorado. The 45-mile ride from Durango to Silverton offers gorgeous mountain views. There are also plenty of activities and sights to see in both Silverton and Durango, including museums and shops. From rich culture and history to modern shopping experiences, great food, and lots of outdoor activities, Southern Colorado can be just as fun as the mountains, especially in the spring.
If you’re planning a spring getaway, you don’t have to go far to make the most of it. Just be sure you’re following COVID protocols and that the sites you want to visit are open during your timeframe. From all of us here at Quick-Set Auto Glass, drive safely out there!
