If you're looking to escape the crowds and discover a different side of Colorado, there are plenty of scenic highways, charming small towns, and hidden gems waiting just beyond the next bend.
Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or simply looking for an excuse to hit the open road, these underrated road trips offer incredible scenery, local history, and plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy the journey.
1. Cache la Poudre Scenic Byway
Starting just west of Fort Collins, the Cache la Poudre Scenic Byway follows Colorado's only federally designated Wild & Scenic River. The drive winds through towering canyon walls, rushing rapids, and dense pine forests before climbing over Cameron Pass.
There are plenty of places to pull over for a picnic, watch kayakers navigate the rapids, or cast a fishing line into the river. During the summer months, don't miss a concert at the legendary Mishawaka Amphitheatre, tucked right alongside the water.
2. Red Feather Lakes
Only about an hour from Fort Collins, Red Feather Lakes feels like a completely different world. Quiet mountain roads lead to peaceful lakes surrounded by forests, making it a perfect destination for hiking, paddleboarding, fishing, or simply enjoying a slower pace.
Pack a lunch, explore the nearby trails, and keep an eye out for moose—wildlife sightings are common in the area.
3. Marble
Marble is one of Colorado's smallest mountain towns, but it's packed with history and stunning scenery. It's best known for the famous Yule Marble Quarry, where the marble used for the Lincoln Memorial and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was sourced.
While you're there, grab a bite at the Slow Groovin' BBQ, then continue the adventure with a high-clearance vehicle to the iconic Crystal Mill, one of the most photographed historic structures in Colorado.
4. Westcliffe and Silver Cliff
If you've never experienced Colorado's Dark Sky Community, Westcliffe should be on your list. By day, you'll enjoy incredible views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. By night, the stars steal the show.
Spend an evening stargazing, browse the local art galleries, or enjoy a quiet dinner downtown. It's a refreshing reminder that some of Colorado's best experiences happen after the sun goes down.
5. Creede
Tucked deep in southwestern Colorado, Creede is a former mining town that has transformed into a vibrant mountain community. The drive into town passes through dramatic cliffs and narrow canyons that are every bit as impressive as the destination itself.
Once you arrive, catch a performance at the Creede Repertory Theatre, stroll the historic downtown, or explore the nearby Bachelor Loop, a self-guided tour through old mining sites.
6. Paonia
Known for its orchards, vineyards, and creative community, Paonia offers a completely different Colorado experience. Instead of ski resorts and busy tourist attractions, you'll find local wineries, farm markets, art galleries, and quiet country roads.
Late summer is an especially great time to visit when peaches, cherries, and other fresh fruit are in season.
7. San Luis Valley
Many travelers head straight for Great Sand Dunes National Park, but the surrounding San Luis Valley deserves time of its own. The region is filled with natural hot springs, wildlife refuges, historic churches, and wide-open landscapes unlike anywhere else in Colorado.
If you're making a weekend of it, consider stopping in Hooper for a soak in one of the area's unique geothermal pools.
8. Grand Mesa
Often overshadowed by Colorado's famous mountain passes, Grand Mesa is actually the world's largest flat-top mountain. More than 300 lakes are scattered across the landscape, creating endless opportunities for fishing, kayaking, hiking, and wildlife viewing.
The cooler summer temperatures also make it a great escape from the Front Range heat.
9. Ouray via the Million Dollar Highway
While the Million Dollar Highway receives plenty of attention, many travelers rush through without spending much time in Ouray itself. Often called the "Switzerland of America," the town is surrounded by towering peaks and waterfalls.
After the drive, relax in the famous Ouray Hot Springs, explore Box Canyon Falls, or simply wander Main Street and enjoy the mountain atmosphere.
10. Steamboat Lake State Park
Steamboat Springs gets plenty of visitors, but Steamboat Lake State Park remains one of northern Colorado's hidden treasures. Surrounded by forests and mountain peaks, the lake is ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, or spending a peaceful afternoon by the water.
The nearby Hahn's Peak hiking trail offers panoramic views that are well worth the climb and far less crowded than many of Colorado's better-known summits.
